Hyperhidrosis is when a person experiences excessive sweating. It is estimated that 3 in every 100 Australians suffer from hyperhidrosis, meaning they sweat for no reason, unlike sweating that happens during exercise or being hot. Focal hyperhidrosis is where the sweating occurs in one particular area; it is especially common in the armpits, hands, feet or face. The sweat stains and smells that can come from hyperhidrosis can be a cause for low self esteem for some.
This excessive sweating can be caused by the nerves in areas prone to sweating becoming overactive. This leads them to trigger the sweat glands even when there is no need for the body to cool down. It can also occur when a person is particularly nervous or stressed. The mental impact of this condition can take a toll on sufferers, leading to increased anxiety and depression. It can also exacerbate skin conditions such as eczema and tinea.
An anti-wrinkle injection to the sweat glands helps to relax the gland, thereby reducing the amount of sweat it produces when activated by nerves. This treatment can take place in the armpits, hands, feet and other areas that experience excessive sweating. HOW DOES THE TREATMENT WORK?
During your one on one consultation, your experienced doctor will identify the location of the glands creating excess sweat. This area will then be treated with an anti-wrinkle injection to relax the gland. You may experience some swelling or bruising, particularly because the areas prone to hyperhydrosis are quite sensitive. This however will disappear in a few days.
You will notice the full effect of the treatment after 10 days, and the effect will last for 3 to 4 months. After that time, it is recommended to have a follow up treatment with your M1 medical practitioner.
