The temporalis is a broad, fan-shaped muscle located on each side of the head, just above the ears. It’s one of the primary muscles involved in chewing, working alongside the masseter to help lift and close the jaw. This muscle is active not only when eating but also during unconscious habits such as jaw clenching or teeth grinding, particularly at night.
When the temporalis muscle becomes overused or tense often due to stress, anxiety, or bruxism (teeth grinding) it can lead to physical discomfort including tension headaches, facial pain, and pressure around the temples. In some cases, overdevelopment of the temporalis can also contribute to the appearance of a wider or more angular upper face and jawline.
